--Fri Jul 30th, 2010-- Verily, to Allah do we belong and to Him is our return.

The University of Waterloo-Muslim Students' Association (UW-MSA) mourns the loss of lives in the recent airplane crash of Airblue Flight 202 on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 in the Margalla Hills of Pakistan near Islamabad. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and especially moreso to hear that no passengers survived this accident. Some of our students had relatives and close friends who passed away on this flight, and we pray that the families of the passengers receive patience and strength from Allah (Glory be to Him).

The death of 152 passengers and staff aboard the ill-fated Airblue flight 202 has been described as the worst aviation disaster ever recorded in Pakistan. This unfortunate incident calls for a show of support to the family and friends of the deceased, and the UW-MSA is willing to assist any UW-Muslim student who has been deeply affected by the loss of lives.

The UW-MSA has sent a memo to academic advisors of different UW departments to ensure that our fellow brothers and sisters especially those of Pakistani origin are given the appropriate attention and support by their faculties should they require it. Since UW is in the middle of Spring examinations there is a possibility that this incident might have had a considerable impact on their preparation for these exams; and if that may be the case, then the academic advisor should provide alternative solutions to these students.

The UW-MSA is also currently in touch with Imam of Waterloo Masjid, Sheikh Abdul-Mannan Syed, if any student wishes to consult him and seek spiritual support with regards to this incident. We urge any Muslim student who requires any further assistance to contact the UW-MSA whenever they feel the need to do so. Any such assistance will be treated with absolute confidentiality.

In these sad times, our thoughts and prayers are with the mourning families, and we pray that Allah (Glory be to Him) grants them patience to bear this tragedy.

O you who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere. (Al-Qur'an, 2:153)
